Black-Owned Business Features Continue: Meet Dr. Jamila Maddox

There is not enough time in February—recognized as Black History Month—to celebrate the impact Black-owned businesses have made in Uptown. That’s why Uptown Consortium, Inc. (UCI) wants to extend the celebration. Last month, in honor of Black History Month, UCI featured a video that showcases a variety of unique Black-owned businesses in Uptown.

“Through this video, we are celebrating and recognizing the central role African Americans and Black-owned businesses are contributing to Uptown and greater Cincinnati’s economy,” said Brooke Rapp, Director of Community Development, UCI. “We hope the video inspires everyone to learn more about the diverse collection of businesses in Uptown and consider supporting them all year long.” Check out the video here in case you missed it.

“Buying local and supporting these Uptown businesses year-round is an incredible way to put your money directly back into the community,” Rapp said. “Not only do you support local business owners when you shop locally, but you also support local education, infrastructure, and community development.”

Continuing this celebration, UCI is releasing a new Black-owned business feature this month. Dr. Jamila Maddox, Owner of Cincinnati Healing Arts, is the first featured business.

As a Black-owned wellness boutique, Cincinnati Healing Arts stands out by providing simple, safe, and natural health care. Located in Avondale Town Center, she specializes in chiropractic health care, functional nutrition, and personal injury rehab for auto accident victims. Interested in meeting Dr. Maddox? Visit the Cincinnati Healing Arts website or call 513-376-3996 to request an appointment.

Cincinnati Healing Arts also has retail space dedicated to selling products from Avondale and local small businesses. Visit the company’s blog, for up-to-date wellness content.

Looking for other ways to support local businesses? Here are a few tips:

  • Like and share their content on social media. This is an easy way to give the business exposure to a larger audience.

  • Buy gift cards. The pandemic may still impact the availability of some products in-store. Buy a gift card you can use later.

  • Take time to leave a review. Writing a review of your experience is a great and free way to boost the business's search engine optimization online.
