Beautification Project Brightens Streets

Keep Cincinnati Beautiful awarded a $5,000 City of Cincinnati grant to improve the intersection of Vine and Woolper streets to renovate sections of the streetscape.

The intersection of Vine and Woolper is a high-traffic area, with 18,000 cars a day traveling through the gateway to Avondale and Clifton. According to the Cincinnati Zoo, 60 percent of their visitors travel through this intersection which, in part, inspired its improvement. 

Clifton Town Meeting applied for the grant with assistance from the Uptown Consortium, and the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden assisted the two organizations with coordinating volunteers for the project.

According to Linda Holperhoss, executive director of Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, the blight index drops significantly following the beautification of public spaces. “Litter, graffiti and illegal dumping decrease in frequency by double digits after a modest investment is made in high traffic areas,” said Holperhoss. 

Volunteers planted low-maintenance perennials, annuals and shrubs in the new landscape, which was unveiled in June.
