1st Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Awards Dinner in Cincinnati
The Dan Beard Council, Boy Scouts of America recognized four local individuals for their outstanding service in the community at the 1st Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Awards Dinner on January 26, 2012. Honored guests included Dr. Keith M. Wilson, UC Health; Cedric C. Newberry, Meineke Car Care Centers; Ozie Davis III., Avondale Comprehensive Development Corporation; and Don Lakes, Withrow University High School.
The purpose of the Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award is to recognize outstanding services by an adult individual or an organization for demonstrated involvement in the development and implementation of scouting opportunities for youth from rural or low-income urban backgrounds. The award is in fulfillment of Dr. Young’s dream of justice and equality for all.
Approximately 165 people attended the dinner at the Dan Beard Council Scout Achievement Center, including 20 Scouts and their families. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Courtis Fuller, news anchor at WLWT Channel 5 and the keynote speaker was Dr. O’dell Owens, president of Cincinnati State Technical Community College.
The event’s planning committee co-chairs were Ralph O. Lee of Total Quality Logistics and Janelle M. Lee of Uptown Consortium, Inc. Other members of the planning committee included Candice Owens of Mercy Health, Richard Dyer of WLWT Channel 5, Kenneth Parker of the U.S. Department of Justice, Craig Young of the Dan Beard Council, Herbert R. Brown of Western and Southern Life, the Honorable William L. Mallory Jr. of Hamilton Municipal Court, Myra Epps of U.S. Bank, and Rodrico Epps of the Dan Beard Council.
